Year 12
Year 11
Finally reaching Year 12 can be really exciting. It’s the final stretch of your schooling before heading off to university, so it’s an opportunity to end your high school career on a high note while kicking back and having some fun. You’re in that strange nebulous spot where lots of things are coming to an end, but there are also a ton of exciting opportunities to look forward to!
Since it’s your last year at school, you’ll want to make the most out of it so you don’t graduate with any regrets. Here are some tips to prepare for Year 12 and make sure you live it to the fullest:
What better way to start the year than by getting organised? This will help you prepare for your incoming workload to make sure you’re on top of everything. Staying organised will help you get your work done on time, leaving you plenty of time to hang with your friends! You can go analogue and use a paper planner to keep track of your tasks or you can use online software to take note of important deadlines. You can also use these tools to record your goals and projects and what you’ve done to accomplish them!
It’s important to manage your time wisely, as it’s a valuable life skill that will come in handy later on. Sometimes this means doing the difficult tasks, or even tasks you don’t look forward to completing, first. It also teaches you to avoid cramming because that can lead to a series of mishaps. By getting on top of your tasks right away, you’ll avoid the panic that comes with trying to squeeze in work right before the deadline—and you’ll thank yourself for it!
Year 12 can be stressful, and it can get overwhelming to deal with competing deadlines, the desire to just have fun in your last year of school, and the fact that you’re now going through many “lasts”. This is why it’s crucial to make sure you stay physically and mentally healthy. Eat the right food on the regular, make time for exercise, and most importantly, get enough sleep! Taking care of yourself makes sure that you’re fit to tackle schoolwork and enjoy the rest of your school year.
Now that you’re inching closer towards adulthood, it’s time to wise up on the finances. If you haven’t made one yet, start your own bank account and learn how to look after your own money. Come up with a feasible savings plan with all your sources of income. If you don’t have any yet, maybe now’s the time to look for a part-time job that could help cushion you financially. Knowing how to create a basic budget will be incredibly helpful for when you go away to university!
Figuring out what you want to do after finishing school can be intimidating because it involves a lot of major decisions. Planning as early as now can help you narrow down your programme selections and give you an idea of what to expect once you graduate. You don’t need a plan that’s incredibly clear and detailed, but having a general idea of what you want to do is a good place to start. You can also ask the guidance of your school counsellors, your parents, or your older siblings who have gone through it all.
Most importantly—have fun! Year 12 is the last time you’ll get to see some of the faces you’ll see every day. While the school year can be incredibly challenging, it’s also the last time you’ll have your current routine and dynamic. Quite simply, things will never be the same again—so go out and enjoy it! Take as many photos as you can, spend time with your friends, and participate in school activities. Enjoying your last school year is also an important part of making it a successful one.
Year 12 can be tough. Apart from the academic challenges, it also means having to say goodbye. With so many exciting things to look forward to, there’s no need to stress too much about the future. Make lots of memories, make more friends, and be excited about what’s to come. You’ve got this!
